CEAS Scholarships

College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Undergraduate Scholarships.

Following is a list of scholarships administered by the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). Depending on the funding source, some of the scholarships are available every year and others on a less regular basis. The availability of scholarships varies from year to year and is contingent upon donor resources and interests, as well as variable economic trends. There are different eligibility requirements for each of these scholarships. In general, entering freshmen should have a high school average not less than 90 and continuing students should have a cumulative grade point average not less than 3.0, unless otherwise specified.

Special Scholarship Opportunity

ACEC New York
2006 UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIPS


The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) will award up to ten scholarships to undergraduate students intending to become consulting engineers. Up to nine scholarships will provide a stipend of $2,500 and one scholarship of $5,000 to be used during the student’s final year of undergraduate study at one of the Engineering Schools in New York State. Only students having completed their third year of study (4 year program) or fourth year of study (5 year program) by June 2006 are eligible for the scholarship. The Bachelor’s Degree would have to be taken in one of six fields of engineering which make up the primary practices of the member firms of ACEC New York: Mechanical Engineering; Electrical Engineering; Structural Engineering; Civil Engineering; Environmental Engineering or Chemical Engineering.Applicants must be eligible to receive their Undergraduate Degree by June 2006. Applications must be accompanied by a certified transcript. Applications must be received at ACEC New York Headquarters by February 3, 2006*.

ASHRAE

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, will advance the arts and sciences of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigerating to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world.

The ASHRAE Scholarship Program

The ASHRAE Scholarship Program is designed to encourage and assist in the education of men and women pursuing a career in the field of heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) through its granting of scholarships and fellowships. The program also serves the public interest by aiding in the education of men and women to become qualified to practice as engineers in the HVAC&R field.

UNDERGRADUATE ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIPS – APPLICATION DEADLINE: DECEMBER 1

Available to undergraduate college/university students pursuing a Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree in a course of study, which traditionally has been a preparatory curriculum for a career in HVAC&R. Candidates must be enrolled full-time in a program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or one that is substantially equivalent in countries outside the U.S.A., and have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a scale where 4.0 is the highest. For a list of ABET-accredited or substantially equivalent programs by school, go to the ABET website at http://www.abet.org. Applications, including all supporting documents, must be postmarked no later than December 1. Re-applications accepted from former scholarship recipients and applicants. Recipients are selected at the Society’s Winter Meeting in January. Scholarships are awarded for the following academic year beginning in the fall semester.

Scholarships awarded to entering freshmen are made based on high school academic achievement as demonstrated in their application to Stony Brook. No separate scholarship application is required. To be considered for a freshman scholarship, high school seniors should have submitted their application for admission to a program of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences not later than January 15 of the year they are planning to attend the University.

GRUMMAN ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIPS
Approximately ten $2,000 scholarships per year are available through the Grumman Endowment to engineering or applied sciences majors who are incoming freshmen and continuing students. Scholarships may be renewed for the next three years if the student maintains a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0.

INDUSTRIAL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS
Ten to fifteen $2,000 scholarships are awarded annually to incoming freshmen in an engineering or applied sciences major whose academic records indicate outstanding promise for a career as an engineer, computer scientist, or applied mathematician. The scholarship will be renewed each year for the next three years if the student maintains a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0.

 

Scholarships are awarded to continuing students in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences by application or by faculty/staff nomination. For those scholarships which require an application, the relevant information and forms are available on-line and through Blackboard to students officially admitted to and matriculated in a College of Engineering and Applied Sciences major.

APPLIED MATHEMATICS AND STATISTICS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
A $1,500 scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding junior or senior student who is a major in Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

CAROL COOKE TELECOMMUNICATIONS SCHOLARSHIP
A $1,000 scholarship, funded by Siemens Corporation is available for a continuing student in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Engineering with an interest in a career in telecommunications.

CSEMS SCHOLARSHIP
CSEMS is a Scholarship and Academic Support Program funded by the National Science Foundation and administered by Stony Brook University’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The program is administered by the Department of Technology and Society in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The program will provide a comprehensive support and scholarship program for associates and bachelors degree candidates at Nassau and Suffolk County Community Colleges and Stony Brook University. Eligibility for scholarship support is based on economic need as determined by a student’s eligibility to receive federal scholarship support. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and be enrolled in one of the majors within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

CURTISS-WRIGHT CENTENNIAL OF FLIGHT SCHOLARSHIP
Curtiss-Wright Corporation has established an endowment that will provide an engineering student with a $1,000 scholarship. The student must be enrolled full-time in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Molecular Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science / Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. They must have an interest in and demonstrated potential for success for a career in aerospace.

DATA DEVICE CORPORATION SCHOLARSHIP
Data Device Corporation offers one $3,000 ($750 per semester for the four semesters of the junior and senior years) scholarship to a student in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4 and be a Long Island resident. A paid internship may also be available in the summer between the junior and senior years.

DAYTON T. BROWN SCHOLARSHIP
Dayton T. Brown, Inc. offers a $1,000 one-time award to a sophomore or junior engineering student in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science / Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering whose home is in the New York metropolitan area (Long Island and the five boroughs of New York City). Applicants should have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and a demonstrated financial need. A paid internship may also be available.

EDO MARINE AND AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS SCHOLARSHIP
EDO Marine and Aircraft Systems offers two scholarships to continuing students (sophomore, junior, or senior) in Mechanical Engineering at $2,500 each. Students must be enrolled full-time, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. Preference is given to U.S. citizens.

GT EQUIPMENT TECHNOLOGIES, INC. SCHOLARSHIP
GT Equipment Technologies, Inc. offers one $2,500 scholarship for a sophomore entering the junior year or a junior entering the senior year. The student must be a major in Engineering Science / Materials Science or Mechanical Engineering, and must be involved in research for academic credit working in one of the College's research laboratories. A paid internship may also be available.

THE OMNICON GROUP, INC. SCHOLARSHIP
The Omnicon Group, Inc. will provide financial assistance in the form of two scholarships, each equivalent to the cost of annual New York State in-state tuition to a full-time second semester sophomore entering the junior year who has a grade point average of at least a 3.0. The student must be a major in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering, who has excellent communications skills.

The Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer and Information Science at Polytechnic University are offering a small number of Special Grants to college juniors who would like to gain experience in advanced research this summer, This summer research program is sponsored by faculty research grants awarded by the National Science Foundation, other government agencies, and alumni donations.

The research areas are: telecommunications, wireless communications, digital signal and image processing, image analysis and understanding, cyber-security, and VHDL.

Stipends will be $440 per week and will be awarded for an eleven-week period from May 29, 2007 through August 10, 2007.

One full tuition scholarship at the New York State resident rate is offered each year to an outstanding undergraduate major in Applied Mathematics and Statistics. The student need not be a New York State resident to apply.

SOCIETY OF FLIGHT TEST ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP
The Long Island chapter of the Society of Flight Test Engineers has established an endowment which will award $600 to a junior or senior student enrolled in any of the majors in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. The student must have a grade point average of at least a 3.0 and have demonstrated interest in a career in the aerospace industry.

SRIVASTAV, TUCKER & WEITZMAN SCHOLARSHIP
This $500 scholarship award for an Applied Mathematics and Statistics student was established by an alumnus to recognize the contributions of three members of the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics: Ram Srivastav, Alan Tucker, and Esther Weitzman.

SVAM INTERNATIONAL, INC. SCHOLARSHIP
SVAM International Inc. has established a scholarship in the amount of $5,000 for a Computer Science student who has a grade point average of at least a 3.0 and demonstrated financial need who may not be eligible for other forms of financial support.

SYMBOL TECHNOLOGIES, INC. SCHOLARSHIPS
Symbol Technologies, Inc. has donated five $5,000 scholarships to students who are sophomores entering the junior year or juniors entering the senior year with a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0. The student must be a major in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Mechanical Engineering. Preference will be given to students who are underrepresented in the engineering and applied sciences, especially women and minority students.

ST PAUL TRAVELERS INSURANCE CO., INC. SCHOLARSHIP
St Paul Travelers Insurance Co. Inc has established two $2,500 scholarships for students in the Applied Mathematics and Statistics major who are pursuing a career in actuarial science and who have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.2.

THE THOMAS F. IRVINE UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
An endowment fund has been established to honor Dr. Thomas F. Irvine, Professor Emeritus in Mechanical Engineering, who served as the first Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a continuing Mechanical Engineering student who had proven that he/she has the talent and potential to be a leader in the field of mechanical engineering.

THE WEINIG FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Weinig Foundation provides four to five $4,000 scholarships each year to meritorious junior or senior students in any one of the College's programs: Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Molecular Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science / Materials Science, Information Systems, Mechanical Engineering, or Technological Systems Management. (At least two recipients will be students majoring in Applied Mathematics and Statistics.) To be considered for a scholarship award, students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.3.

The following scholarships DO NOT require applications. The recipients are chosen based on nominations made by faculty/staff and are dependant on donor funding. The student does not contact faculty/staff for nominations. When the funding becomes available, the Dean's Office will contact the relevant department representatives.

FRANCES & VELIO MARSOCCI SCHOLARSHIP
One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior student in a CEAS major who is in good academic standing and who has provided outstanding service to the extracurricular activity in the College.

METROPOLITAN CLUB / ASSOCIATION OF OLD CROWS SCHOLARSHIP
The Metropolitan Club chapter of the Association of Old Crows, a national professional organization of electronic defense, offers competitive scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $1,500 each year to eligible students nominated by their institution. To qualify, students must be United States citizens who have completed at least two years of study toward their baccalaureate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or another technical field, and who are permanent residents of Nassau, Suffolk, or Westchester Counties, or one of the five boroughs of New York City. The Association selects recipients on the basis of academic achievement and/or financial need.

THE RAHSAAN T. JACKSON SCHOLARSHIP AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENT
The Rahsaan T. Jackson Scholarship Award for Extraordinary Achievement will be awarded to a student enrolled in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences who exemplifies the attributes associated with Rahsaan, a talented student in Electrical Engineering who passed away in 1998, after a long and brave battle with a debilitating illness. Those attributes are: scholarship as shown by a strong record of academic achievement, integrity, courage, and determination.

SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP / EHASZ GIACALONE ARCHITECTS, P.C.
The Society of American Military Engineers (New York City Post), and Ehasz Giacalone Architects, P.C offer one $1,000 scholarship yearly to a deserving engineering student who needs financial assistance and who is a U.S. citizen or in the process of being naturalized.

SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIPS
The College participates in the Society of Automotive Engineers Scholarships Program which offers four $2,000 scholarships to incoming freshmen admitted directly to Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Science. The scholarships are renewable annually for years two, three, and four years provided that the student maintains a grade point average of at least 3.0 in an engineering degree program and contributes to the activities of the campus chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers.

STEWART HARRIS SCHOLARSHIP
One scholarship between $250 and $1,000 is offered to a freshman engineering student.

TAU BETA PI SCHOLARSHIPS
The Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society offers two $500 scholarships to engineering students (one freshman and one sophomore) who, in the past year, have demonstrated outstanding promise for achievement as engineers. Special Scholarship Programs Administered by

STONY BROOK ALLIANCE FOR MINORITY  PARTICIPATION

The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. The program provides both academic support and stipends to underrepresented minority students planning to major in science, math, engineering and technology who maintain a 3.00 cumulative grade point average.. For this program, a minority student is defined as being of African American, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, Alaskan Native, Hawaiian Native, or American Pacific Islander heritage.
