SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS PROGRAM (S-STEM I AND S-STEM II)
Award Description - There are two different S-STEM awards available for Stony Brook students. S-STEM I is for students in Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics. S-STEM II is for students in natural and physical science, geo and marine science, and mathematics. Neither S-STEM I nor II is meant to support students intending to attend a professional school, e.g., medical school, upon graduation.
Application Deadlines -
For continuing students and transfer students the application deadline is May 1.
For incoming freshmen students the deadline is February 1.
Start of Award -Scholarships are awarded in the fall semester for a full academic year. A student who graduates in December will receive half of a full-year award.
Transfer Students-Are not considered for S-STEM support until they have attended Stony Brook for at least a semester and have a Stony Brook transcript. In certain instances, we will waive the previous policy provided the student participated in S-STEM at their previous institution and had at least a 3.50 cumulative GPA at their previous institution. Transfer students must submit their application by May 1.
Credit Loads-All S-STEM students must be at full-time status. S-STEM is predicated upon the idea that students will complete their degree requirements in four years, regardless of whether they started their studies at Stony Brook or transferred to Stony Brook. Class standing is determined at the beginning of the semester in which the student first receives an S-STEM award and is determined by the number of accumulated credits shown on a student’s transcript. An accepted candidate can receive the following:
- First-year Students can receive a maximum of 8 semesters of support
- Sophomore Students can receive a maximum of 6 semesters of support
- Junior Students can receive a maximum of 4 semesters of support
- Senior Students can receive a maximum of 2 semesters of support
BS/MS Programs - S-STEM monies are used to support undergraduate students. Students accepted into combined Bachelor/Masters programs are no longer considered undergraduates and will no longer receive support.
Reporting Requirements -All S-STEM recipients are required to report their summer and post-graduation plans. Failure to do so before the end of the semester will result in the loss of scholarship support for the following academic year. Recipients are also required to participate in on-line surveys and attend scheduled meetings.
Verifying Income -The S-STEM Scholarship is based upon economic need and as such, all applicants and continuing S-STEM students are required to have a current FAFSA form on file with the University’s Office of Financial Aid at the time of application. The S-STEM program will verify the level of financial need for each applicant and current recipient before the start of the academic year.
GPA-A 2.80 cum GPA is required for continued support.
Academic Dishonesty - Any student who is receiving S-STEM support and who is found guilty of academic dishonesty or any other violation of the Student Conduct Code will lose their S-STEM scholarship support.
