College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Undergraduate Scholarships.

Following is a list of scholarships administered by the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). Depending on the funding source, some of the scholarships are available every year and others on a less regular basis. The availability of scholarships varies from year to year and is contingent upon donor resources and interests, as well as variable economic trends. There are different eligibility requirements for each of these scholarships. In general, entering freshmen should have a high school average not less than 90 and continuing students should have a cumulative grade point average not less than 3.0, unless otherwise specified.

 

Scholarships are awarded to continuing students in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences by application or by faculty/staff nomination. For those scholarships which require an application, the relevant information and forms are available on-line and through Blackboard to students officially admitted to and matriculated in a College of Engineering and Applied Sciences major.

SCHOLARSHIP OFFERINGS: Academic Year 2008 - 2009

ACEC Scholarship
The American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC New York) will award at least ten scholarships to undergraduate students intending to become consulting engineers. At least nine scholarships will provide a stipend of $2,500 and one scholarship of $5,000 to be used during the student?s final year of undergraduate study at one of the Engineering Schools in New York State. Only students having completed their third year of study (4 year program) or fourth year of study (5 year program) by June 2008 are eligible for the scholarship.


APPLIED MATH AND STATISTICS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
AMS Memorial Scholarship offers one $1,500 scholarship given in honor of Applied Mathematics and Statistics graduates who died at the time of the World Trade Center tragedy.  This is awarded annually to an outstanding junior or senior student who is a major in Applied Mathematics and Statistics.


AMS - ROBERT J. AND KATHRYN B. FREY SCHOLARSHIP
One full tuition scholarship at the New York State resident rate is offered each year to an outstanding undergraduate major in Applied Mathematics and
Statistics. The student need not be a New York State resident to apply.


COMPUTER SCIENCE, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS SCHOLARSHIP (CSEMS)
CSEMS is a Scholarship and Academic Support Program funded by the National Science Foundation and administered by the Department of Technology and Society in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Stony Brook University. The program provides a comprehensive support and scholarship program for associates and bachelors degree candidates at Nassau and Suffolk County Community Colleges and Stony Brook University. Eligibility for scholarship support is based upon economic need as determined by a student?s eligibility to receive federal scholarship support. Applicants for CSEMS must meet the U.S. Department of Education definition of financial need, i.e., the sum left over after the estimated family contribution is subtracted from the cost of attendance. The level of unmet financial need cannot exceed the amount of the CSEMS award. Applicants for CSEMS must have a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form on file with the Stony Brook University Office of Financial Aid. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and be enrolled in one of the majors within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. All application information is held in strictest confidence.

CURTISS-WRIGHT CENTENNIAL OF FLIGHT SCHOLARSHIP
Curtiss-Wright Centennial of Flight Scholarship has established an endowment that will provide an engineering student with a $1,000 scholarship. The student must be enrolled full-time in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Molecular Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science / Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0. They must have an interest in and demonstrated potential for success for a career in aerospace.


DATA DEVICE CORPORATION SCHOLARSHIP
Data Device offers one $3,000 ($750 per semester for the four semesters of the junior and senior years) scholarship to a student in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Computer Science.  Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.4 and be a Long Island resident. A paid internship may also be available in the summer between the junior and senior years.
 

DAYTON T. BROWN SCHOLARSHIP
Dayton T. Brown. Inc. offers a $1,000 one-time award to a sophomore or junior engineering student in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science / Materials Science, or Mechanical Engineering whose home is in the New York metropolitan area (Long Island and the five boroughs of New York City). Applicants should have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and a demonstrated financial need. A paid internship may also be available.


JOAN M. KENNY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Joan M. Kenny Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences in honor of Joan?s more than 30 years of service to Stony Brook University and her tireless dedication to the needs of our undergraduate students.


THE OMNICON GROUP, INC. SCHOLARSHIP
The Omnicon Group, Inc. will provide financial assistance in the form of two scholarships, each equivalent to the cost of annual New York State in-state tuition to a full-time second semester sophomore entering the junior year who has a grade point average of at least a 3.0. The student must be a major in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering, who has excellent communications skills.


THE RAHSAAN T. JACKSON SCHOLARSHIP AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENT
The Rahsaan T. Jackson Scholarship Award for Extraordinary Achievement will be awarded to a student enrolled in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences who exemplifies the attributes associated with Rahsaan, a talented student in Electrical Engineering who passed away in 1998, after a long and brave battle with a debilitating illness. Those attributes are: a strong record of academic achievement, integrity, courage, and determination.


SOCIETY OF FLIGHT TEST ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP
The Long Island chapter of the Society for Flight Engineers has established an endowment which will award $600 to a junior or senior student enrolled in any of the majors in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, The student must have a grade point average of at least a 3.0 and have demonstrated interest in a career in the aerospace industry.


SRIVASTAV, TUCKER & WEITZMAN
Srivastav, Tucker & Weitzman Scholarship offers one $500 award given by an Applied Mathematics and Statistics PhD and is named after faculty who were particularly influential to him.


SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS (S-STEM)

THE THOMAS F. IRVINE UNDERGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP IN MECHAN1CL ENGINEERING
An endowment fund has been established to honor Dr. Thomas F. Irvine, professor Emeritus in Mechanical Engineering, who served as the first Dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a continuing Mechanical Engineering student who has proven hat he/she has the talent and potential to be a leader in the field of mechanical engineering.
 


THE WEINIG FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Weinig Foundation provides four to five $4,000 scholarships each year to meritorious junior or senior students in any one of the College’s programs: Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical and Molecular Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Science / Materials Science, Information Systems, Mechanical Engineering, or Technological Systems Management. (At least two recipients will be students majoring in Applied Mathematics and Statistics.) To be considered for a scholarship award, students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.3.

STONY BROOK LOUIS STOKES ALLIANCE FOR MINORITY PARTICIPATION (LSAMP)
The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation. LSAMP is funded to increase the number of underrepresented minorities (African-American, Latino, Native American, Alaskan Native and Native Pacific Islander) who pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Applicants must be either citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The LSAMP program is especially interested in high-achieving students who intend to pursue post-baccalaureate studies in science or mathematics and bachelor degrees in engineering. The LSAMP program is not funded to support students declaring majors in medicine, nursing, or allied health sciences. All application information will be held in strictest confidence. The following scholarships DO NOT require applications. The recipients are chosen based on nominations made by faculty/staff and are dependant on donor funding. The student does not contact faculty/staff for nominations. When the funding becomes available, the Dean's Office will contact the relevant department representatives.


FRANCES & VELIO MARSOCCI SCHOLARSHIP
One $500 scholarship will be awarded to a junior or senior student in a CEAS major who is in good academic standing and who has provided outstanding service to the extracurricular activity in the College.
METROPOLITAN CLUB / ASSOCIATION OF OLD CROWS SCHOLARSHIP
The Metropolitan Club chapter of the Association of Old Crows, a national professional organization of electronic defense, offers competitive scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $1,500 each year to eligible students nominated by their institution. To qualify, students must be United States citizens who have completed at least two years of study toward their baccalaureate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or another technical field, and who are permanent residents of Nassau, Suffolk, or Westchester Counties, or one of the five boroughs of New York City. The Association selects recipients on the basis of academic achievement and/or financial need.

SOCIETY OF AMERICAN MILITARY ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIP / EHASZ GIACALONE ARCHITECTS, PC.
The Society of American Military Engineers(New York  City Post)and Ehasz Giacalone Architects, P.C offer one $1,000 scholarship yearly to a deserving engineering student who needs financial assistance and who is a U.S. citizen or the process of being naturalized.

SOCIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERS SCHOLARSHIPS
The College participates in the Society of Automotive Engineers Scholarships Program which offers four $2,000 scholarships to incoming freshmen admitted directly to Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Engineering Science. The scholarships are renewable annually for years two, three, and four years provided that the student maintains a grade point average of at least 3.0 in an engineering degree program and contributes to the activities of the campus chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers.

STEWART HARRIS SCHOLARSHIP
One scholarship between $250 and $1,000 is offered to a freshman engineering student.
 
TAU BETA PI SCHOLARSHIPS
The Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society offers two $500 scholarships to engineering students (one freshman and one sophomore) who, in the past year, have demonstrated outstanding promise for achievement as engineers.
